Hakeem subtracted 8 from a number, then multiplied the difference by 5. The result was 20. Write and solve an equation to find the number, x.

a/n *I'm in regular 8th-grade math, we're using envision math. Specifically lesson 2-4, but the question I presented to you is from lesson 2-3. I'm in dire need of assistance. Please write an equation (and answer of x).

OK....  Let 'x' = the number

He subtracts 8        x-8

Multiplies the result by 5       5(x-8)

And that = 20                         5(x-8) = 20

Now solve for x

5(x-8) = 20

5x - 40 = 20

5x = 60

x = 12

Let x be the number

Subtracting 8 from this  =  x - 8

Multiplying this by 5 = 5(x - 8)

And this = 20

So....we have

5(x - 8)  = 20     divide both sides by 5

x - 8  =  4          add 8 to both sides

x = 12
