Your mom bought a multi pack of Hot Fries from Sam’s
Club last week. When you got home from school your
brother and his friends had eaten 1⁄6 of the bags. By the
end of the week your family had eaten 50% of what was
left. There are 30 bags of Hot Fries left in the box.
How many were in the box to begin with?

30 after 50% sub 

30*2=60

60= 5/6 of the box

60/5=12

12=1/6 of the box

12*6=76

 

the box had 76 bags to begin with

Call the original number of bags, B

 

After  1/6  of these were eaten, there  were   B  - (1/6)B  =  (5/6)B left

 

After  50% of these were eaten.....there were (1/2)(5/6)B   =  (5/12)B left

 

And  this  = 30     

 

So

 

(5/12)B   = 30     multiply  both sides by  12/5

 

B = 30(12/5)

 

B =  360 / 5

 

B = 72
