Since the roots are               x = –7   and   x = –1     then

the associated factors are    (x + 7)   and   (x + 1)    respectively.

which makes the equation     x2 + 8x + 7

x2 + 8x + 7 = 0    Without the = 0 it isn't an equation, it's just an expression.

The expression has to equal something to be an equation.
