[ 3 x 10^8] / [6 x 10^5]  =

3/6   x  10^8 / 10^5  =

0.5 X 10^3  =

500 times as large

Just divide the population of the US by the population.

(3 X 10^8) / (6 X 10^5)=500x the population of US is greater than the population of Vermont in 2000.
