If the famous baseball player for the San Francisco Midgets, Larry Ponds, has a 1/4 chance of earning a walk on each plate appearance, what is the probability that he will earn a walk exactly once in his next two plate appearances? Express your answer as a common fraction.

(1/4)   = probability of a walk      (3/4)   = probability of no walk

There are two appearances.....choose either one.....and we  have that

C (2,1)  (1/4) (3/4)   =   3 / 8
