why is negative 2 squared negative 4

\((-2)^2=-2*-2=+4\\~\\ BUT\\~\\ -2^2=-1*2^2=-1*2*2=-4\\~\\ \mbox{It has to be like this because otherwise } 10-2^2\quad\mbox{would give the same answer as }10+2^2\)
