let x be the total number of participants
4 buses + 5 vans = x
3 buses + 8 vans = x,
then, x = x
4 buses + 5(16) = 3 buses + 8 vans
4 buses - 3 buses = 128 - 80
1 bus = 48 passengers
therefore,
4(48) + 5(16) = x
272 = x
therefore, there are 272 students..
