The price of a stock decreased $3 per day for five days. What was the total change in value of the stock over the five-day period? Write a number sentence explaining this.

Let P be the original price.

And the number sentence representing the daily decrease is given by .... P - $3N  ... where N is the number of days that have elapsed since the price = P.

So, at the end of  5 days, the price is  ...... P - $3(5)  = P - $15

So, the change is just (the ending value) - (the beginning value) = (P - $15) - (P) =   -$15
