One number is 3 less than a second number. Twice the second number is 4 less than 3 times the first. Find the smaller of the two numbers

second number=y

 

y-3=x

2y=3x-4

 

Solve. 

 

2y-6=2x

2y=3x-4

 

-6=-x+4

 

-2=x

 

x=2

 

NOW FIND Y, IF Y IS SMALLER

Let the first number = x

And the second number  = x + 3

And we know that

 

2(x + 3) + 4  = 3x     simplify

 

2x + 6 + 4  =  3x

 

2x + 10 =  3x

 

10 =  x   =  the smaller number
