x    =   2y -3

x + y = 954        

(2y-3) ²   +   y ² = 954    

4y^2 -12y+9 + y^2 - 954 = 0

5 y^2 -12y - 945 = 0

Then use Quadratic Formula   a = 5  b = -12  c = -945
