Let P be the total weight  of paint when the can is full.......and let C be the weight of the can....and we have this system of equations

(1/2)P + C = 5

(1/3)P + C  = 4        subtract the second equation from the first

(1/6)P = 1kg  → P = 6kg    and this is the total weight of the paint when the can is full

So.....using the first equation

(1/2)(6) + C = 5

3 + C = 5

And C= 2kg = the weight of the can

A drop from 1/2 to 1/3=1/6, which weighs 1 Kg

Therefore a drop of 1/3 or 2/6=2 Kg. Therefore: 4 - 2=2 Kg-weight of empty can.
