The axis of symmetry can be found by using -b / 2a.

y=-x^2-6x-7..

-(-6) / 2(-1)= 6/-2=-3- which is the axis of symmetry.

Put x=-3 back into the equation...

y=-(-3)^2-6(-3)-7=2.

Thus, the vertex is (-3,2).
