How many square units are in the area of the pentagon shown here with sides of length 8, 9, 12, and 14 units?
If you have a bit of creativity and knowledge of the pythag. theorem, this one will be easy for you.
I'll give you hints, and if you need an answer then I've included it at the bottom with a solution.
Try drawing a line that is parallel to the 12 in side. Be careful; we don't know if it is perpendicular to the side with length 8 in!
Next, prove that the parallel line you just drew is an extension of the 9 in line.
Each letter A-J is each of the numbers 1-9 respectively.
The answer is J+I*(J+C)
