Asteroid 69230 Hermes has entered Earth’s atmosphere (which means it is now a meteor) and will hit the ground soon. The meteor has a mass of 6.70 X 10^10 kg and is now traveling at 17,500 m/s and is 10,000 m above Earth’s surface. What is the total mechanical energy of the meteor? (do not include units in your answer)

Total mecahnical energy=Potential energy + Kinetic energy

PME =( mass • g • height) +( velocity^2. mass. 1/2)

PME=(6.7 X 10^10. 9.81. 10,000) + (17,500^2. 6.7 X 10^10. 1/2)

PME=10,265,947,700,000,000,000=1.0266 X 10^19. Total energy of the asteroid.

P.S. That amount of energy is equivalent to 2,444 one-megaton H-bombs!!!!.
