1. The fast freight train left at noon and arrived at 6Pm. The slow freight train made the same trip in 8 hours. What was the speed of the slow freight train if the speed of the fast freight train was 60 mph?

2. Henry can ride his horse at 4 mph to get to the field on time. If he stops for 1 hour to make a speech to his troops, he must ride at 5mph for the whole trip to get to the battlefield on time. How far is it to the battlefield?

Thank you so much!!angel

Using the formula:  d  =  r · t:

1)  The fast freight train left at noon and arrived at 6 pm   --->   it traveled form 6 hours   --->   t  =  6

     The fast freight train's speed was 60 mph   --->   r  =  60

     d  =  r · t   --->    d  =  60 · 6  =  360 miles.

     The slow freight train made the trip is 8 hours   --->   t  =  8

     Since it made the same trip as the fast freight train   --->   d  =  360

     d  =  r · t   --->    360  =  r · 8   --->   r  =  360/8   --->   r   =  45 miles per hour.

2)  Henry can ride his horse to get to the field on time at 4 mph   --->   r =  4     and     time = t

     d  =  r · t   --->    d  =  4 · t  --->   t  =  d / 4

     If he stops for one hour he must ride at 5 mph   --->   r  =  5

     This time is one hour more than the previous time   --->   t  =  d / 5 + 1

     Since the times are equal:     d / 4  =  d / 5 + 1

     Multiply both sides by 20:        5d  =  4d + 20

     Subtract 4d from both sides:      d  =  20 miles

Thank you so much

1) 60 x 6 =360 miles- the distance the fast freight train travelled.

360 / 8 =45 mph-the speed of slow freight train.

2) Since the Least Common Multiple of 4 and 5 =20, therefore the distance to the battlefield is:

20 miles. If Henry rides at 4 mph, it will take him 5 hours to get to the battlefield. If Henry rides at 5 mph, it will take him 4 hours to get to the battlefield.
