Hi Katie-Leigh,

I like seeing you one the forum. :)

I am not sure if you understand.  It is good to say thank you but if you do not really understand it is very important that you say so.  :D

One and 7/10 is 6 and 4/5 of what number?

Just give the unknown number a letter untill we work out what it is.  N is good :)

so the question becomes:

One and 7/10 is 6 and 4/5 of N?

of means times so we have

One and 7/10 is 6 and 4/5 x N?

$$\frac{7}{10}=6\frac{4}{5}\times N\\ \frac{7}{10}=N\times 6\frac{4}{5}\\$$

Now the opposite of multiply is divide so to get N all by itself you will need to divide by that mixen numeral

$$\frac{7}{10}\div 6\frac{4}{5}=N\times 6\frac{4}{5}\div 6\frac{4}{5}\\ \frac{7}{10}\div 6\frac{4}{5}=N\\ N=\frac{7}{10}\div 6\frac{4}{5}\\$$

You can finish it on the calculator or by hand :)

Do you completely understand?

If you don't, try and explain what is bothering you about it ..........................

Convert the mixed fractions into just fractions. Ex. one and two thirds = 5/3. "is" means equal, and "what number?" would be an unknown variable x.

One and 7/10 is 6 and 4/5 of what number?

1 7/10=17/10

6 4/5=34/5

Let the number be N

17/10N=34/5, solve for N
