first, isolate the variable by subtracting 35 from both sides and dividing .55 from both sides

your answer should be x<108/11 OR 9.818181...

simplify the sides individually first.

 

40.4 >  35 +0.55x

now get all the numbers without an x on one side.  that is, subrtact 35 from both sides.

 

40.4 -35 >  35 +0.55x -35

 

5.4 > 0.55x

 

And yse, now divide both sides by 0.55
