i just can't figure out how to split the $2 to jay and kay.

Jay, Kay, and Lee are hiking. Lee forgot to bring water. Jay brought 2 gallons of water and Kay brought 1.75 gallons of water. The three of them agree to divide all the water equally among them. Lee gives $2 for the water he receives, which Jay and Kay agree to divide fairly between the two of them. How much money should Jay receive?

Since Jay brought 2 gallons and Kay brought 1.75 gallons, Jay should get 2*2/(2 + 1.75) = 16/15 dollars.  To the nearest cent, this is $1.07.

Together Jay and Kay brought 2.00 + 1.75  = 3.75 gallons.

To divide it equally among the three persons, each person will get 3.75 / 3  = 1.25 gallons.

Jay will give up 2.00 - 1.25  =  0.75 gallons (and keep 1.25 gallons).

Kay will give up 1.75 - 1.25  =  0.50 gallons (and keep 1.25 gallons).

Together, Jay and Kay will give up 1.25 gallons.

Jay gave up 0.75 gallons which is 0.75 / 1.25  =  0.60  or  60%.

Kay gave up 0.50 gallons which is 0.50 / 1.25  =  0.40  or  60%.

So, Jay should get 60% of the $2.00  --->   0.60 x $2.00  =  $1.20.

Kay should get 40% of the $2.00        --->   0.40 x $2.00  =  $0.80.
