A scientist recorded the movement of a pendulum for 15s. The scientist began recording when the pendulum was at its resting position. The pendulum then moved right (positive displacement) and left (negative displacement) several times. The pendulum's furthest distance to either side was 5 in. The pendulum took 4 seconds to swing to the right and the left and then return to its resting position. Graph the function that represents the pendulum's displacement as a function of time.

 

Write an equation to represent the displacement of the pendulum as a function of time.

 

Graph the function for 15 seconds.

Starts at a low point so let's use the sin function

 

Amplitude = 5    period = 4 s     (given)

 

5 sin ( s x )       will give amplitude of 5

period = 4    usual period is 2 pi ...we need to shorten it to 4 s

                            2 pi /s = 4

                             2 pi/4 = s

 

5 sin(pi/2 x )
