A scooter travels 10 miles per hour faster than an electric bicycle. The scooter traveled for 3 hours and the bicycle traveled for 5 1/2 hours. All together the scooter and bicycle traveled no more than 285 miles. Find the maximum speed of each
Let the speed of the bike = S
Then the speed of the scooter= S + 10
And time * rate = distance....so....
3(S+10) + (5 + 1/2) (S) = 285 simplify
3S + 30 + (5 + 1/2)S = 285
3S + 30 + (11/2)S = 285 subtract 30 from both sides
3S + (11/2)S = 255
(6/2)S + (11/2)S = 255
(17/2)S = 255 multiply both sides by 2/17
S = 255 (2/17) = 30 (mph) =speed of bike
S + 10 = sqeed of scooter = 30 + 10 = 40 (mph)
