Hi! I'm stuck on this problem. I've found out the slope, which is -1/3, and the part I'm stuck on is the y intercept. I'm not sure if it's -2 1/2, or -3, or -2 3/4. Please help!! Thank you

Find a linear inequality with the following solution set. Each grid line represents one unit.

(Give your answer in the form ax+by+c>0  or  ax+by+c>=0where a, b, and c are integers with no common factor other than 1.)

The y intercept isn't too clear in this picture.

Since you've already found the slope, I would recommend using the point-slope formula, y - y_1 = m(x - x_1).

One point on the graph is (1, -3)

y - -3 = -1/3(x - 1)

y + 3 = -1/3x + 1/3

y  = -1/3x - 8/3

3y = -x - 8

x + 3y + 8 = 0

Since the yellow goes down the y axis.

x + 3y + 8 <= 0

Hello! Thank you for your great explanation! It really helped me understand this better! However, the question said that it was wrong because it wants the format to be in a > or >= format. How would I change x+3y+8<=0 to >=? Thank you so much again!

Edit: Nevermind, I got it now! All I had to do was change the signs (+ to -) and - to +! Thank you so much for your help!! smiley

Yep, everytime you multiply/divide by a negative, you want to switch the signs.

For example, -3 < 5.

-3 < 5

3 < -5 (multiply/divide by -1).

However, 3 is not less than -5, so you have to switch the signs 3 > -5.

Welcome to the forum. :DD
