Think about this say the dimensions were  2 units by 3 units.  Then the area would be   2*3 unites squared.

What did I do .. I multiplied the length  by the breadth.

Well if that is what you ahve to do with numbers, you must do the same thing with the letters.

 

Area = (4x-1)*(x+2)    units squared

 

Area = (4x-1)(x+2)    units squared

 

You can expand this if you want or you can just leave it as it is.

2((4x-1)+(x+2))

 

2(4x-1)+2(x+2)

 

8x-2+2x+4

 

Your expression will be 10x+2
