We want to find the value of  x  that makes  3x + 2  be  -4 .

We want to find the value of  x  that makes this equation true:

 

3x + 2  =  -4      Now let's solve this equation for  x .  Subtract  2  from both sides.

 

3x  =  -4 - 2

 

3x  =  -6          Divide both sides by  3 .

 

x  =  -2
