Let x= Cheryl's speed

Then, x+2 = Kathy's speed

Distance = (Rate)(Time)

5.4(x+2) = 9x

5.4x + 10.8 = 9x

           3.6x = 10.8

               x = 3

Cheryl's speed is 3 mph and Kathy's speed is 5 mph.

Distance is same for both

rate x time = distance

kathy rate = Cheryl rate + 2

(c+2) 5.4 = c 9.    Solve for c. Cathy speed.    Then Kathy speed= c+2
