Explain why the equation, cos (theta) = 1.4, has no solution.

Because cos(theta) MUST be between +1 and -1, otherwise it will violate this famous law:

Sin^2(theta) + Cos^2(theta)=1. If you substitute your 1.4 in this formula, it will violate it, because 1.4^2=1.96. The answer must NOT exceed 1.
