A circular oil slick has a diameter of 1 km. The newspaper reported an area of more than 1 km squared. is the newspaper correct?

 

The area of a circle is pi*radius squared     and the radius is 1/2 a km

 

\(area=\pi*r^2\\ area=\pi*0.5^2\\ area=\pi*0.25\\ area\approx 0.785km^2 \)

 

So no the oil slick is smaller than 1km^2
