Is there a figure with exactly 257 tiles in each pattern? Explain.
a) T= 2n+1

b) T= 2n+4

If the question means, can you get an answer of 257 for T by using only whole numbers for n in these formulas, then:

T = 2n + 1 T = 2n + 4

257 = 2n + 1 257 = 2n + 4

256 = 2n 253 = 2n

128 = n 126.5 = n

Then, if you use 128 for n in the formula T = 2n + 1, then you can get the answer of 257.
