The ratio of the of tables to chairs at a café was 1 : 4. After the café owner bought 16 more chairs, the ratio of the number of tables to chairs at the café became 3: 14. How many tables were there at the café at first?

t/c = 1/4

t/(16+c) = 3/14

Cross multiply and solve the variables from there. :))

+1

4t = c

14t = 48 + 3c

14t = 48 + 12t

2t = 48

t = 24

I think you may have accidentally done something wrong.
