A man has 14 coins in his pocket, all of which are dimes and quarters. If the total value of his change is $2.00, how many dimes and how many quarters does he have?
______dimes
_______quarters
Let the number of dimes = N
So.....the number of quarters must just be 14 - N
And
Number of dimes * value each + Number of quarters * Value each = Total Change
(N) (.10) + (14 - N) (.25) = 2.00 simplify
.10N + 3.5 - .25N = 2.00
-.15N + 3.5 = 3 subtract 3.5 from both sides
-.15N = -1.5 divide both sides by -.15
N = 10 = number of dimes
14 - N = 14 - 10 = 4 = number of quarters
