Let total friends be T

Let number of pretzels each friend can have be P

Let covered pretzels be C

 

Expression for number of pretzels remaining to be covered = (P * T) - C

 

Evaluating the expression:

T = 15, P = 3 and C = 3*12 = 36

 

Hence, (P * T) - C = (3*15) - 36 = 9
