9 sides have 1 digit (1, 2, 3, ..., 9) and 3 sides have 2 digits (10, 11, 12)

Total number of digits:  1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2  =  15

Divide this value by the number of sides:

15 /12  =  1.25

Sum of the faces    1 + 2 + 3......+ 12 = 78

 

78/12 = 6.5
