problem:the top of a round table is 4 feet in diameter. the top splits to allow two extra boards to be inserted.the expansion board are 4 feet by 1 1/2 feet. 

what is the are of the expanded table??

help me..

The area of the table before the boards are inserted is

pi(d/2)^2     where d is the diameter...so we have

pi(4/2)^2  = pi (2)^2   = 4pi ft^2

The area of one of the boards is 4 x (1+1/2)  = 4(3/2) = 6 ft ^2

And there are two of them.....so this makes  12 ft^2

So....the total area with the boards inserted is just

(4pi + 12) ft ^2
