Find the missing side of the triangle. This is a WHOLE NUMBER answer. Use the LOWER CASE letters to solve the problem.

 Use Formula c2=a2+b2.. The values are a=17 ft, b=8 ft, and c is the unknown.

a2=b2+c2

c2=a2-b2

c2=172-82

The Pythagorean Theorom can only be used on RIGHT TRIANGLES.  I am assuming this is a right triangle though angle A does not look like 90 degrees.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2     so

(the triangle is not labled appropriatly to directly substitute into this equation)

Leg1^2  + Leg2^2 = Hyp^2

8^2 + c^2 = 17^2

64 + c^2 = 289

c^2 = 289 -64 = 225     SQRT 225 = c = 15
