Q12.4.3). The sum of two numbers is 89. Three times the smaller number exceeds the larger number by 71. Find the numbers.

Let x be smaller number and y the larger...so...

x + y = 89    and

3x - 71 = y

Using the second equation to substitute for y in the first, we have

x + (3x -71) = 89   simplify

4x - 71 = 89      add 71 to both sides

4x = 160   divide by 4 on both sides

x = 40      so      40 + y = 89     subtract 40 from bth sides.....so......y = 49
