Find the vertex of the parabola y = 2x^2 + 10x + 8     

 

                                                  y  =  2x² + 10x + 8     

take the 1st derivative               y'  =  4x + 10     

set it equal to zero                     4x + 10  =  0     

                                                           4x  =  –10     

                                                             x  =  –2.5     this is the x-coordinate     

 

find y when x = 2.5                     y  =  (2)(–2.5²) + (10)(–2.5) + 8     

                                                   y  =  12.5 – 25 + 8     

                                                   y  =  –4.5     this is the y-coordinate     

 

the vertex is at                           (–2.5 , –4.5)
