If t is a real number, what is the maximum possible valuef of the expression -t^2 + 8t - 4 - t^2 + 12t - 6?

First, simplify the expression to \(-2t^2 + 20t - 10\)

 

Now, recall that the vertex occurs at \(t = -{b \over 2a} = -{20 \over -4} = 5\)

 

This means that if we substitute \(t = 5\) into the expression, we get the vertex.
