Portia solved the quadratic equation x^2 + 2*sqrt(2)*x + 1 = 0 by completing the square. In the process, she came up with the equivalent equation

(x + r)^2 = s,

where r and s are constants. What is s?

Rearrange  as

x^2   +  2sqrt (2)x   =   -1

Take 1/2 of 2sqrt 2   = sqrt 2.......square  this  =  2      ....add  to  both sides

x^2  + 2sqrt (2) x   +  2  =  -  1  + 2

( x + sqrt (2) ) ^2   =   1

s  = 1
