My friend sets out walking at a speed of 3 miles per hour. I set out behind her 5 minutes later at 4 miles per hour.

When I walk, how many miles has my friend traveled?

3 miles per hour is 1.34112 meters per second. 5 minutes = 60 * 5 = 300 seconds. She has walked 300 * 1.34112 = 402.336 meters.

3/60 = 1/20 of a mile - your friend speed per minute.

5 x 1/20 =5/20 =1/4 of a mile by the time you start walking.

dizaztor, it doesn't ask for meters. It is for miles, in which case 1/4 would be correct.
