Ok. Let's just start off with this.... I hate math! In fact, do you know what M.A.T.H. stands for? Easy: Mental Abuse To Humans.

Here are some questions on my Math Test that I don't really understand. I have managed to answer a few of the ones here, but I'm not quite sure about my answers. Please help if you can! (It's Algebra 1, if that helps any.)

(HIMA stands for 'Here Is My Answer)
1). Write a linear equation to model the situation. You borrow $70 from your brother. To repay the loan, you pay him $7 per week. Use (w) to denote the number of weeks and (y) as the balance on the loan.
HIMA: Y = 7w + 70

2). Write an equation of the line that passes through the point (3,0) and has the slope of m = -2.
HIMA: Y - 0 = -2(X - 3)

3). Write an equation of the line that passes through the point (1,2) and has the slope of m = 2.
HIMA: Y - 2 = 2(X - 1)

4). Write an equation of the line that is parallel to the given line (Y = X + 3) and the given point (5,0).

5). Write an equation of the line that is parallel to the given line (Y = 2X + 3) and the given point (-4,1).

I don't want to overwhelm anyone who might be reading this, so I am just going to ask these 5 questions in this post. I will put up another post with a few more questions right after this. If you are reading this, and if you help me, I just want to say Thank You for helping me to avoid flunking Algebra 1!

(1) You're almost right. Its actually y = 70 - 7w or you can write it as y = -7w +70

(2) & (3) seem to be right but to get full marks your teacher might want you to fully simplify
so for (2) you would go
Y - 0 = -2(X - 3)
Y = -2x + 6
& for (3)
Y - 2 = 2(X - 1)
Y - 2 = 2x - 2
Y = 2x - 2 + 2
Y = 2x

For (4) & (5) you need to be aware of 2 important facts
1stly if 2 lines are parallel then their gradients will be equal.
2ndly when an equation is written in the form y = ax + b, a always equals the gradient. In other words y = mx +b

eg y = 4x +7 has a gradient of 4

So combining this knowledge with the formular y - y1 = m(x - x1) you get these answers

(4) y - 0 = 1(x - 5)
y = x - 5

(5) y - 1 = 2( x - -4)
y - 1 = 2x + 8
y = 2x + 9
