A piece of dowel is used to stir paint in a cylindrical tin of diameter 180 mm and height 195 mm. The dowel is 270 mm long and placed in the tin. What is the smallest possible length of dowel visible above the rim of the tin?

The dowel will be the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs 180 and 195 mm

 

d^2 = 180^2 + 195^2        d = 265.38   is the amount of dowel in the paint     remainder out of the paint

    is equal to  270 - 265.38 =4.62 mm
