If $\left(x+\dfrac{1}{x}\right):\left(x-\dfrac{1}{x}\right)=5:4$, then find the value of x.

Cross multiply

5x - 5/x   = 4x + 4/x

x  = 4/x + 5/x

x = 9/x

x^2 = 9

x = +- 3       I would sub in both of those values to see if true !
