The ratio of Alan's apples to Don's apples was 3:5. When Alan gave 30 of his apples to Don, the ratio of Alan's apples to Don's apples became 1:5. Find the number of apples Alan had at first?

Don's apples = D
Alan's apples = A
D = A * 1.666

A - 30 = (D -30)/5

A = 54
D = 90

Alan had 54 apples at first

A : D = 3 : 5

(3x - 30)/(5x + 30) = 1/5

x = 18

Alan:    3x = 54

Don:    5x = 90
