In \(\triangle XYZ\), we have \(\angle X = 90^\circ\) and \(\tan Z = 3\). What is \(\cos Z\)?

arctan (3) = 71.565

cos (71.565) =.31623

Here is the exact method:

tan = opp / adj      pick opp = 3   then    adj = 1    hypotenuse = sqrt (10)     via Pythagorean theorem

                               cos = adj/hypot = 1/sqrt(10)

                                                         = sqrt 10 / 10
