A triangle has legs 5 and 12.  Find the distance of the altitude to the hypotenuse.

The distance to the hypothesis is 14.

Seriously doubt that the distance to the 'hypothesis' is 14 .....longer than either of the legs...longer than the hypotenuse (13) ..... cheeky

There are ONLY 4 hypotenuses possible:13, 14, 15 and 16

The altitudes to the hypotenuse are as follows respectively: 4.615,  4.176,  3.538  and  2.583

Nope, there's only one hypotenuse for this right triangle, and its length is 13.

Altitude    L = (5 * 12 )/13    smiley

Dragan: Why are you CERTAIN that it is a "right triangle"? The question doesn't say so. Isn't it possible to have triangles with: 14, 12, 5 or 15, 12, 5 or 16, 12, 5 side lengths?

When you speak of 'hypotenuse'   and 'legs' you are describing a right triangle .....

Pavlov answered your question, but I'll say it again: the longest side of a right-angled triangle is called the hypotenuse. Squares and rectangles have their hypotenuses, and they are called diagonals.smiley
