A pencil has a cylinder body with a cone shaped end. The cylinder is 5cm long with radius of 0.29cm. The cone has a slant height of 1cm and has the same radius as the cylinder. Determine the surface area of the pencil to the nearest tenth of a square centimetre.
Surface area of the cylindrical part of the pencil =
Area of the non-conical end + area of the cylinder "side"
pi*r^2 + 2 pi* r * length =
pi * (0.29cm)^2 + 2pi *(0.29cm) * (5cm) = about 9.37 cm^2 (1)
Surface area of the conical part = pi * r * (slant height of cone) =
pi (0.29cm)(1cm) = about .911 cm^2 (2)
So.....the total surface area is the sum of (1) and (2) = about 10.28 cm^2 = about 10.3 cm^2
