There is the square root of 40xy divided by the square root of 8 my friend said you have to find the square roots before dividing but the textbook we use showed the square root of 72 divided by the square root of 6 and it equaled the square root of 12 and I am confused do I figure out the square roots of 40xy and 8 first or do I divide them and get 5xy or something

Notice that it doesn't really matter

√[ (40xy ) / (5xy) ]  =  √[40/5]   =√ 8  =  2√2

OR

√[ (40xy) / (5xy) ]  =  √ [ 40xy ] / √ [ 5xy]  =  √[ 8 * 5xy ] / √[ 5xy]  =

√8  * √[ 5xy ] / √[5xy ]  =

√8    =  2√2
