12+4/2^3-2^2

Simplify the following:
12+4/2^3-2^2

2^3 = 2×2^2:
12+4/2×2^2-2^2

2^2 = 4:
12+4/(2×4)-2^2

2×4  =  8:
12+4/8-2^2

The gcd of 4 and 8 is 4, so 4/8 = (4×1)/(4×2) = 4/4×1/2 = 1/2:
12+1/2-2^2

2^2 = 4:
12+1/2-4

Put 12+1/2-4 over the common denominator 2. 12+1/2-4  =  (2×12)/2+1/2+(2 (-4))/2:
(2×12)/2+1/2+(2 (-4))/2

2×12  =  24:
24/2+1/2+(2 (-4))/2

2 (-4)  =  -8:
24/2+1/2+-8/2

24/2+1/2-(8)/2  =  (24+1-8)/2:
(24+1-8)/2

24+1 = 25:
25-8/2
