Simplify : –1 + 5(6 – y)

This doesn't seem like exponents, but ok.

 

Start with the Distributive Property to distribute 5 to both the 6 and the -y. (5*6)+(5*(-y)) You now have: -1+30-5y

 

I'm assuming the expression equals 0 since there is no answer to begin with, so add 1 on both sides to get rid of the -1. You now have:30-5y=1

 

Subtract 30 from both sides to get rid of the 30 on the side with the variable. You now have: -5y=-29

 

Then, divide by -5 on both sides to get the variable by itself. You now have: y=5.8

 

So y=5.8
