First, you are more accurate. Do you wanna measure something to the nearest 1/32 of an inch or to .000001 of an inch?
Second, it is easier. Yes, it may use lots of math, but would you rather do 5 mins of math or 2 hours measureing the object?
Finally, because you will use these ratios in future math. And future math is math that applies to your job.
