Find the slope between the points (1,5) and (-2,4). Explain how you find the slope of a line between these two points and state the slope as a fraction.
Let (1,5) and (-2,4) be (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) respectively
slope = ( y2 - y1) / ( x2 - x1) = (4 - 5) / (-2 - 1) = - 1 / - 3 = 1 / 3
Slope = rise/run = (y1 - y2) / (x1 - x2) It does not matter which point you PICK as x1 y1 or x2 y2
(5-4) / (1-(-2)) = 1/3 = slope
